After much trial and error I came upon the Edgestar dehumidifier which has the important feature of the fan does not run continuously. As I am unable to lift more than 10 pints it is difficult to find a suitable dehumidifier that will do the job in my basement. Edgestar definitely does.
However, I wanted to buy another one for my 1st floor level as the humidity runs high in my house and found that they changed the design. The fan still does not run continuously which is the greatest feature but now the exhaust air blows out the side instead of the top and the water bucket now has a small square window so you can not see where the water level is like last year. I like to catch it before it fills up to the top as it is easier to empty.
Why would anyone want exhaust air blowing on them in a room as there are not too many places to put the dehumidifier. It is even harder to keep kids from being blown on. Even in the basement it limits where you can place the unit so it does not blow towards your sump pit area or towards your washer and dryer.
It is a shame that Edgestar ruined a wonderful product that I would not purchase now. Also, they stopped making the 40 pint and there is only a 30 pint and 50 pint to choose from and the 30 pint is too small and the 50 pint bucket capacity is too big for me to handle.
Nothing stays the same. I do not understand why a company changes a perfect product to one that is not useable anymore.

I had this almost l l/2 years before the condenser stopped working, thus no dehumidifying. The fan worked, but not condenser. Factory warranty for 1 year.
I bought unit from Abt Electronics, Glenview, IL and (because of my terrible experiences with dehumidifiers)bought a 3-yr. warranty offered on the Abt site, from Square Trade for $25.
I notified SquareTrade of problem, and they say it cannot be repaired so they are refunding my FULL purchase price of unit!! AMAZING!
My advice: NEVER, NEVER buy a small portable dehumidifier without a 3-year warranty--two years beyond factory, if they offer 1 year. THANKS SquareTrade!! You rock!!
I purchased this dehumidifier in 2010 it lasted three years. When it works it works good , but it is like any other dehumidifier it did not last. I was told it was a good unit but for what I paid not worth it. Buy a cheap dehumidifier. For the price you pay for alen you can buy two cheap ones for the same price as one alen. I think there junk like all other. Would not recommend. I would rate it at 0000000000

I bought this as Consumer Report said it was a good buy. When it works, it works well. When it doesn't, it's awful.
For some reason the water bucket does not appear to sit correctly, or the filter gets clogged. Once that's happened, the only way it can be corrected is to take it back to Sears. Mine's been there 3 times.
Mine's going back today and I'm guessing I'll have to pay for it this time. If I do, I'm going to cut my losses and buy something different rather than throwing good money after bad. There is no way I could recommend this dehumidifier.
