Sunpentown SD652 Mini Dehumidifier Review
The Sunpentown SD652 Mini Dehumidifier could be considered as a larger version of the SD350. It uses the same Peltier (thermo-electric) technology that does not use refrigerants and therefore can dispense with a compressor.
The Peltier heat pump works by passing electricity through a "sandwich" of two different materials, one on top of the other. This creates a "heat flux" where the two materials meet each other, heating one side of the "sandwich" and cooling the other. Water vapor condenses on the cool side and thus moist air that is passed over it is dried.
Without the compressor this method makes the SD652 quieter than the conventional refrigerant type, although a fan is still needed so it is far from silent.
This technology can only be applied to units with a low water extraction capacity and the SD652 extracts only 650ml (about 1.4 pints) per day. This water extraction rate was recorded at 86°F and 80% relative humidity. Water extraction rates fall as temperature and/or relative humidity fall and this rate would be lower at the more often used test conditions of 80°F and 60%RH, as used by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.
The SD652 is recommended by the manufacturers as being suitable for small rooms, such as nurseries and small bedrooms, and for enclosed spaces, closets and wardrobes for example. While it may be effective in a wardrobe or closet this is not a unit we would recommend to control humidity effectively in a room of any size. A sleeping adult exhales about half of one pint of water at night. If we assume eight hours of sleep the SD652 would barely keep up with this source of moisture alone at its maximum stated water extraction rate of 1.4 pints in 24 hours.
For closets and wardrobes there are less expensive and more convenient alternatives such as rechargeable desiccant models and while the effectiveness of this unit in a wardrobe is not in question it must be asked whether this unit represents value for money.
Similar to the SD652 is the Sunpentown SD652TI. The only significant difference between these two units is the inclusion with the TI variant of an anti-bacterial system employing an ultra-violet light combined with a Titanium Dioxide mesh filter.
