GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier Review

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier is a small to medium capacity, Energy Star® certified dehumidifier.

In many dehumidifier reviews by consumers this unit is consistently praised for its performance, build quality and ease of use and is among the best dehumidifier models for smaller areas currently available.

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier has recently been replaced by the GE ADER40LP but stocks of the ADER40LN are still available for purchase. The two models are essentially identical and our dehumidifier review of the GE ADER40LP will replace this page when stocks of the ADER40LN are exhausted. GE ADER40LP 40 Pint Dehumidifier Review

GE home dehumidifiers are justifiably popular and we have no hesitation in recommending this unit to our visitors.

Overview

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier is a smaller capacity portable home dehumidifier with a water extraction rate of up to 40 pints per day. It has all the features and capabilities needed for efficient and effective humidity control and ease of use including auto-defrost to prevent damage when operating in cool places and soft touch, electronic controls. The water collection container is front mounted to make removal and replacement simple and the dehumidifier is also capable of continuous drainage if preferred.

When the bucket is full the GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier stops working thanks to an auto shut-off control, which prevents spillage. An indicator lamp on the control panel alerts you that the dehumidifier has stopped and that the bucket should be emptied. The unit is portable and is equipped with casters and a carrying handle and is compact and relatively light in weight. The removable air filter is washable and cleaning the filter is the only regular maintenance required.

Features

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier is a portable dehumidifier and is furnished with castor wheels and a top-mounted carrying handle for ease of movement. Weighing 35lb, and with its slim design, relocating the dehumidifier should not be a problem in the home. The unit measures just 13.38 x 10.25 x 19.5 inches and its shallow depth, of a little over ten inches is particularly noteworthy.

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier is equipped with an adjustable humidistat which can be used to set the level of relative humidity (RH) at which you feel comfortable and is sufficiently low to prevent the growth of mold and the appearance of condensation. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends that realative humidity of 30% to 50% should be maintained in our homes. A level of around 45% will be sufficient to stop mold growth and to control dust mites in the house and will be comfortable for the occupants.

Once your setting has been made and the desired RH achieved the appliance will only operate if and when that level is exceeded. This ensures that the dehumidifier does not operate more than necessary and thereby saves energy, reducing your electricity charges. Another advantage is that the RH is not reduced to a level which would make the air too dry for your comfort and prevents damage to household items made with wood and leather which may be damaged by excessive drying.

Another feature of the GE ADER40LN is its auto-defrost system. If you are familiar with dehumidifiers you will be aware that water is extracted from the air by condensing water vapor onto refrigeration coils. As these coils are similar to the ones found in a domestic refrigerator it is not surprising that ice will form on them, even at a room temperature of up to 70°F.

Auto-defrost works by sensing the build up of ice and switching off the compressor. The air from the room continues to run over the coils and warmth in the air helps to melt the ice. This feature ensures that the dehumidifier is not damaged and may be used safely in cool temperatures, as low as 41°F. It does not mean, however, that this unit is a low temperature dehumidifier.

In lower temperatures the frequent and lengthy defrosting cycles reduce the effectiveness and energy efficiency of a refrigerant dehumidifier. If you need a dehumidifier for an area which is consistently below 65°F a more specialized unit, such as a purpose built basement dehumidifier, is preferable.

The water collection containers installed in dehumidifiers are always relatively small to keep the overall size of the appliance to a minimum. These containers can be emptied by hand but the once or twice daily chore can be unwelcome and sometimes inconvenient.

The GE ADER40LN is equipped with a continuous drainage facility which allows a small plastic hose to be attached to the appliance and run to a nearby drain or other outlet. With this feature enabled emptying the water container is no longer required and the dehumidifier will continue with its work, even when you are away from home.

The drainage system works by gravity alone so it may be necessary to raise the dehumidifier a foot or two to improve its effectiveness. If this is impossible condensate pumps are available which permit the water to be discharged to a drain between 10 and 15 feet above the location of the dehumidifier.

Other useful features of the GE ADER40LN include electronic controls, a digital read-out showing the actual RH in the room, 3 fan speed settings, an indicator to show when the washable filter needs cleaning and a timer to shut the machine down after either two or four hours.

The GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier
Our Recommendation

In our view the GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier is an excellent dehumidifier in its class and a very good choice for use in small to medium sized areas within the home. Due to its capacity of 40 pints per day we would not recommend this unit for use in any but the smallest basement. In common with all portable home dehumidifiers the ADER40LN would not be the best dehumidfier to choose for a cool area of your home.

The reservations above would apply to any 40 pint portable dehumidifier but for use in the home we are more than happy to recommend the GE ADER40LN Dehumidifier as one of the best smaller dehumidifiers we have reviewed.
